Coalitions are groups that work together to improve the health of North Country communities. Coalition building is an important aspect of community substance abuse prevention and control that increases collaboration and sharing of resources when dealing with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Coalition building includes:

  • working with members from a wide variety of community sectors;
  • decision-making by consensus;
  • collaborating on projects;
  • sharing of resources;
  • obtaining community wide input on projects;
  • creating change through local action;
  • involving youth;
  • meeting regularly with members;
  • continuously assessing needs and assets;
  • continuously assessing resources and evaluating projects.
